MOFID Network :

Moroccan Observatory for Fireball Detection

The MOFID (Moroccan Observatory for Fireball Detection) is a recently established "all-sky" camera network.

Objectives

The goal of the network is to record all luminous streaks crossing the Moroccan sky to study meteors and enable the recovery and collection of potential meteorite falls. Once a fireball's trajectory is recorded, researchers can calculate both the object's origin within the solar system and its potential fall zone, provided the meteor is large enough to survive atmospheric entry and reach the ground.

International Partnership

MOFID is a collaborative project and a member of the DFN (Desert Fireball Network), which was established and is led by Curtin University in Perth, Australia. The DFN team provides the MOFID cameras, technical support, and trajectory calculations in partnership with Moroccan research teams.

Expansion and Coverage

The ultimate mission of MOFID is to cover the entire Moroccan territory. To date, five cameras have been installed, and the network is continuously expanding.

Our Partners

The MOFID network is made possible through the collaboration of:

Cadi Ayyad University (Oukaimeden Observatory, Marrakech).

Al Akhawayn University (Ifrane).

The Moroccan Ministry of National Education (Ouzoud Middle School).

Private individuals who volunteer to host cameras on their rooftops.
